Remembering Billie Holiday: 110 Years On From Her Birth (7th April 1915)

Billie Holiday is known, in the words of jazz historian, Loren Schoenberg, as ‘the definitive Jazz Singer’1. Holiday began her singing career in the 1930s after a difficult childhood where she experienced neglect, physical abuse and sexual assault. In 1929, Holiday moved from Baltimore to Harlem where she worked in a brothel before eventually singing in nightclubs for tips. As the BBC notes, ‘This harsh introduction to the world informed the emotional depths Holiday could reach.’2
